I am not the god that brought you out of Egypt

Everything I do, I do religiously
which is to say, doubt is my mother tongue.
You want to be a priest at my alter,
but i am only a poor acolyte,
worshipping the grave of a long dead god.

Everything i do, I do religiously,
I mean, I confess to an empty sky
in a vision the river flows above me
and the sunset glows behind it, blood red
There is no alter to an absent god.

i treat everything like a religion,
by which i mean you are not a (my) priest
you are only a flood in the springtime
only water over the lush new green.
